Not just for denim anymore….the color Indigo is popping up all over the place these days. I like to think of Indigo as Blue’s “moody brother.” Its deep rich hue can feel both classic and modern depending on how it’s used. And although dark, this shade can give off warm and inviting vibes.

So what does Indigo and its color family of Blue do to our senses? Why is it so popular?

Leatrice Eisman, American color specialist and Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute gives us the scoop from her blog post “Retreat into a Place of Quiet Blue Calm #TBT”

“The color blue is strongly associated with sky and water, blue is perceived as a constant in our lives. In the presence of a blue environment, we feel calm. Humans are soothed and replenished when they view blue and there is some evidence that when blue enters our line of vision, the brain sends out chemical signals that work as a tranquilizer. Blue is an excellent choice for areas demanding mental concentration or for products and environments that invite concentration or relaxing, meditative moods.”

Let’s take a look at some beautiful examples of how Indigo was used in a number of different applications.

Beaming with Joy!

Mia Design Blog

The architecture of an interior is just as important as the “pretty decor” inside it. In my humble opinion, one of the most impactful architectural elements, is the use of beams! Not only do beams provide structural integrity to your home, but they also add a lot of interest and in some cases, a touch of grandeur! Beams can accompany all sorts of decorating styles like exposed rustic beams in a mediterranean, farmhouse or industrial-styled home while crisply painted white beams work beautifully inside a coastal home.

Beams are becoming more popular in home remodeling. Faux wood beams are a great option if you want a cost efficient and easy installation solution. For an even more environmentally friendly option, you can use reclaimed wood beams that not only qualify as LEED points, but have strength and natural beauty that will stand the test of time.

Lets take a look at some of my favorite examples incorporating architectural beams!

Color Your Cabinets!

Painted cabinetry is becoming more and more popular these days. I personally am a big fan! I believe paint breaks up the monotony of all the wood finishes found in the home with floors and furnishings. Whether you’re designing a new kitchen or needing to give your bathroom cabinetry a lift, paint is a great way to bring color and life into any room.

Below are some of my favorite examples of painted cabinetry along with some paint color recommendations.
