The Mid-Century Modern style is trending thanks to a variety of pop culture influences including the acclaimed TV show “Mad Men” (a personal favorite).

This style spanned a roughly 25 year period in the middle of the 20th century, from the mid-1940s to 1970. It can be identified as simple, clean and uncomplicated, with a futuristic twist. Mostly seen in California, the Mid-Century Modern style shines brightest in places like Palm Springs. Having just visited, I reveled in the mid-century modern architecture and amazing design boutiques giving center stage to this style!

Houses in this style are characterized by “butterfly roofs”, large sliding glass doors, open floor plans with changing elevations and a seamless integration with the outdoors.

Seemless Intergration with the Outdoors

Mid-Century Modern furnishings were stripped down to their essential forms, with no excess detailing or unnecessary flourishes, highlighting their clean lines and architectural structure. A few masters who created some timeless, quintessential pieces include:

Charles & Ray Eames: the Molded Fiberglass Armchair, designed for Herman Miller

Harry Bertoia: the Diamond Chair

Arne Jacobsen: the Egg Chair

Le Corbusier: the LC-4 Chaise Longue

Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe: the Barcelona Chair

Eero Saarinen: the Womb Chair

Iconic pieces like these can still be found integrated into today’s homes. Originals are of course extremely costly and sought after, but impressive knock-offs are easily available as well.

Re-creating the Mid-Century Modern look in your home is not trivial. Most people don’t want to live in a home that looks like it’s from another era. I’ll show you examples of how to get a retro-inspired look without feeling like you’re living in a time capsule.

Blue Dreams- Interiors Inspired by the Color Indigo

featured image

Enjoy reading directly from the Mia Design Blog site!

Not just for denim anymore….the color Indigo is popping up all over the place these days. I like to think of Indigo as Blue’s “moody brother.” Its deep rich hue can feel both classic and modern depending on how it’s used. And although dark, this shade can give off warm and inviting vibes.

So what does Indigo and its color family of Blue do to our senses? Why is it so popular?

Leatrice Eisman, American color specialist and Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute gives us the scoop from her blog post “Retreat into a Place of Quiet Blue Calm #TBT”

“The color blue is strongly associated with sky and water, blue is perceived as a constant in our lives. In the presence of a blue environment, we feel calm. Humans are soothed and replenished when they view blue and there is some evidence that when blue enters our line of vision, the brain sends out chemical signals that work as a tranquilizer. Blue is an excellent choice for areas demanding mental concentration or for products and environments that invite concentration or relaxing, meditative moods.”

[Leatrice Eisman- https://eisemancolorblog.wordpress.com/2015/04/02/retreat-into-a-place-of-quiet]

Let’s take a look at some beautiful examples of how Indigo was used in a number of different applications.

Back to Work!

Going back to work after a long holiday is never easy….however, having a beautiful, inspiring work space can make it a whole lot easier. What better time then the New Year to update your work environment!

These days, it seems like more and more designers (Kate Spade and Jonathan Adler for example) are branching out with accessories that help make your office environment super chic! An organized, fun and personal work space is important to increasing your productivity and creativity. Whether you have a spacious corner office, a small den in your home, a desk in the middle of an open office floor plan or if you’re stuck in a cubicle (like me), there are ways you can add personality and inspiring items to uplift and excite your work day!

Here are 5 tips on keeping your work space tidy and most importantly, CHIC!

1. Clutter-Be-Gone!
Do away with the clutter and minimize the items on your desk. Only keep the most impactful pieces. Consolidate office supplies to a clean and tidy tray so they take up less space.

2. Pretty Storage Solutions

Storage solutions don’t have to be your typical metal eyesore we’re used to seeing. CB2 and West Elm are a couple of brands that show us that functional storage can also be aesthetically pleasing and stylish.

3. Hide Your Cords

There are so many great cord management products out there to help maintain a clean, cord-free workspace! Below is an example of one that can be installed underneath your desk.

4. Accessorize!

Just like any good outfit, accessories can be just as important as the main piece. Invest in your desk and splurge on accessories that are not only pretty, but will help you stay organized.

5. Make an Inspiration Board!

Nothing is more inspirational than having all the things you wish to accomplish right in front of you to encourage you everyday. Let’s be real, it can be a drag to be stuck behind a desk at work all day, but we do it because we strive to have more, experience more and most importantly, BE more! Display pictures of destinations you would like to visit, family members who inspire you, a paint or fabric swatch you love for a pop of inspirational color, cards from friends and colleagues, or anything else inspiring or uplifting you may have!

Holiday Sparkle with Metallics!

What would the holidays be without a little sparkle?!?

These days, metallics are all the rage and have quickly become the go-to accent in any room. What I love about metallics is that you can use them anywhere and with anything. Their versatility and instant pop make them a personal favorite of mine.

I am also a big fan of gold, but more recently I’ve started to see the mixture of both gold and silver in one space. Who says you have to choose between the two? However, if you want to incorporate either silver or gold, how do you choose? Gold is a better accent to jeweled and deeper tones (teals, orchids, deep purple, rich blues, etc.) while silver is best with lighter and brighter colors (sunshine yellow, cool grey, dreamy pastels, etc.). If you have a neutral room utilizing browns, black or white, you could go either way.

Here are some great examples of how metallics were used in rooms adding contrast, sparkle and shine.

Dynamic Duo: Turquoise & Tangerine!

Separately, they are vibrant, cheerful and fun accents for any space, but together Turquoise and Tangerine are a power couple!

dcc6686f7ab5b33ed6e95ea7abf09e3d

As a design blogger, I’m constantly looking at beautiful interiors of all sorts and was struck by how popular the combination of these colors have become.  If you look at a color wheel, they are innately complementary because they are directly opposite each other. You can see this relationship in the wheel below; blue hues are the primary color while complementary orange hues are on the opposite side making them compatible!

color wheel

When complementary colors are put together, they create visual harmony giving the viewer an inner sense of order and balance…like all is right with the world…well, maybe not that much, but you know what I mean!

Here are some examples of amazing spaces I found featuring this dynamic duo. Hopefully they inspire you to integrate them into your interiors. Not only that, these colors are great selections to use for the upcoming Autumn season!

Shelf Styling

Too often I see boring, cluttered or misstyled shelves. To be honest, I consider this a travesty, although one that can be easily corrected. Shelf-styling is something that anyone can do to create a “designer-look” in a room. Paying attention to details help create that wow-factor when someone walks in.

Think of the accessories and styling in a room as icing on a cake! They can elevate the room to a new level by helping give it a more complete and personalized look.

First, I’ll go over some general rules and share a few tips and tricks. I’ll then show you some examples of shelf-styling at its best and provide some ideas for items to incorporate into your design.

General Rules
  1. Less is more. Don’t overload your shelves. Pair down and purge as you don’t want your shelves looking cluttered. Grouping items and leaving space on either side keeps your look clean and organized.
  2. Use a combination of items. Books, bookends, accessories, picture frames and plants are all good items to use. Try to display items that reflect your style and interests. Over the years, I have found that you can tell a lot about a person by what’s on their shelves!
  3. Throw out symmetry. Symmetry is boring and unimaginative. Instead, trust your instincts and introduce a bit of randomness. This will help give you that desired designer-look in the end!
Tips & Tricks

Grouping Books: Use a  combination of vertical and horizontal stacking. The horizontal stacks can be used as risers for chotzkies. Another trick is to put your most attractive books at eye level and store away your unattractive ones in storage baskets or boxes. You can also group books by color, by subject or randomly.

Paper-Backing:  I’m certainly not talking about soft-cover books here! Adding a fun-patterned paper on the back panel of your shelves can immediately liven them up and add interest. Your shelves become a work of art. You can use adhesive wallpaper or contact paper. If you are doing this, be careful that your accessories don’t compete too much with the paper.

Keepsakes:  Remember, you don’t have to run out and buy all new accessories for your shelves. Use items around the house that mean something to you and deserve to be displayed! On my own bookcase at home, we’ve displayed grandparent keepsakes including rosary beads and a jade elephant figurine. Several family photos also adorn the shelves. These sentimental objects are reminders everyday of how special family is.

Chotzkies:  Unexpected items or “chotzkies” can draw interest and catch our eye. A good rule to remember is if you’re shopping and see something that catches your eye, most likely it will do the same for someone else. If within your budget, I suggest purchasing it, regardless of its style and finding a way to incorporate it!

If you already have items around the house that you would like to use, think about painting them in either an accent or metallic color so they become more neutral and complimentary.

Here is an example of transforming items you may have had or found while scavenging at a thrift shop or garage sale.

Bookends:  Bookends can serve multiple purposes. Not only are they functional by keeping your books in place, they can be fabulous accessories too! Bookends these days are so much fun and can be a great way to add color and whimsy to your shelves.

Storage Baskets & Boxes:  Use storage baskets or boxes to break up spaces and add function to your shelf. You can store ragged books, DVD/Blu-Rays, toys, remotes or anything else you may want to hide while adding uniformity and organization. Below are examples of unique ways to incorporate baskets and boxes.

Style Guide: Industrial Chic

Welcome to my first installment to my Style Guide series, where I take a closer look at unique styles for your home!

One of my favorite current trends is “Industrial Chic” decor. Industrial Chic blends the urban edge of utilitarian design with the warmth of aged woods and worn textures. The easiest way to add industrial elements to your home is through accessories. Industrial accessories can be mixed with just about any style. In traditional settings, it can bring a masculine, modern edge. Conversely in a modern setting, it can add depth and warmth.

Here are some examples of this new style, Industrial Chic….

1. Sepia-tones gives this bedroom a vintage look. The iron globe chandelier, worn suitcases and counterpoised tasks lamps are all elements of industrial decor.

2. This great room is an example of how you can use industrial finishes such as the exposed architectural beams and industrial hood. The worn, greige (grey + beige) hardwood floors are the perfect foundation for the mix of woods in the room. Last but not least, the iron-swivel stools with rustic wood seats are great industrial accessories!
