In honor of the upcoming football season, I thought it would be fun to look at a few examples of “Man Caves”!
Wikipedia defines a man cave or manspace, as a male sanctuary, such as a specially equipped garage, spare bedroom, media room, den, or basement. It is a metaphor describing a room inside the house where “guys can do as they please” without fear of upsetting any female sensibility about house decor or design. Paula Aymer of Tufts University calls it the “last bastion of masculinity”. (Source-Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man_cave)
I know there can often be a stigma or controversy behind the need for these rooms. I myself have often rolled my eyes when hearing a man declaring his need for a “man cave”, however, I do think they are great spaces and would love to have one myself someday…”Wo-man cave” perhaps?
There are MANY different types of man caves depending on the interests of its inhabitor. Themes can range from video games, movies, specific sports or teams…but today I’ll be focusing on sports-themed caves.
Now of course we all don’t have the luxury of having a dedicated spare room or basement to create one of these, especially if you’re in the San Francisco Bay Area like myself. Despite that, there are some cool ways to carve out a small space or incorporate fun items into your home that can lend themselves to the feeling of having a man cave!
