This one’s for all the book lovers out there!

Who doesn’t love forgetting your worries, stresses and curling up with a good book?  Whether it’s romance, mystery, sci-fi or non-fiction you fancy, everyone deserves a comfortable place to retreat and indulge. Although many of us don’t have the luxury of a beautiful library in our home, we can still appreciate and dream of having one! Here are some of my favorite home libraries.

Having an entire extra room in your house to dedicate for a library is definitely a luxury that not many of us have, however we may be surpirsed to know that we have unutilized space in our homes that could be perfect for built-ins.

How about under the stairs? This is a great way to utilize “dead space”.

How about a cozy reading nook? These intimate spaces can be carved out in a guest room, under the stairs, underneath a window or any other odd niche you may have in your home that you are unsure of how to utilize. Here are a few examples that I would personally LOVE to have!!! The hardest part about creating this type of space is never wanting to leave.

At a minimum, if you’re a book lover, why not treat yourself to a dedicated reading chair in a quiet room? We all deserve a little time for ourselves these days. It’s can be as easy as finding a quiet corner, buying a comfy chair and accessorizing with an ottoman, small end table and a throw for those chilly days!

Style Guide- S.4: Modern Mid-Century

2

Enjoy reading directly from the Mia Design Blog site!

The Mid-Century Modern style is trending thanks to a variety of pop culture influences including the acclaimed TV show “Mad Men” (a personal favorite).

Joan Harris (Christina Hendricks), Lane Pryce (Jared Harris), Peggy Olson (Elisabeth Moss), Roger Sterling (John Slattery), Don Draper (Jon Hamm), Betty Francis (January Jones) and Pete Campbell (Vincent Kartheiser) - Mad Men - Season 5 - Gallery - Photo Credit: Frank Ockenfels/AMC

This style spanned a roughly 25 year period in the middle of the 20th century, from the mid-1940s to 1970. It can be identified as simple, clean and uncomplicated, with a futuristic twist. Mostly seen in California, the Mid-Century Modern style shines brightest in places like Palm Springs. Having just visited, I reveled in the mid-century modern architecture and amazing design boutiques giving center stage to this style!

Houses in this style are characterized by “butterfly roofs”, large sliding glass doors, open floor plans with changing elevations and a seamless integration with the outdoors.

Seemless Intergration with the Outdoors

Mid-Century Modern furnishings were stripped down to their essential forms, with no excess detailing or unnecessary flourishes, highlighting their clean lines and architectural structure. A few masters who created some timeless, quintessential pieces include:

Charles & Ray Eames: the Molded Fiberglass Armchair, designed for Herman Miller

Harry Bertoia: the Diamond Chair

Arne Jacobsen: the Egg Chair

Le Corbusier: the LC-4 Chaise Longue

Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe: the Barcelona Chair

Eero Saarinen: the Womb Chair

Iconic pieces like these can still be found integrated into today’s homes. Originals are of course extremely costly and sought after, but impressive knock-offs are easily available as well.

Re-creating the Mid-Century Modern look in your home is not trivial. Most people don’t want to live in a home that looks like it’s from another era. I’ll show you examples of how to get a retro-inspired look without feeling like you’re living in a time capsule.

Blue Dreams- Interiors Inspired by the Color Indigo

featured image

Enjoy reading directly from the Mia Design Blog site!

Not just for denim anymore….the color Indigo is popping up all over the place these days. I like to think of Indigo as Blue’s “moody brother.” Its deep rich hue can feel both classic and modern depending on how it’s used. And although dark, this shade can give off warm and inviting vibes.

So what does Indigo and its color family of Blue do to our senses? Why is it so popular?

Leatrice Eisman, American color specialist and Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute gives us the scoop from her blog post “Retreat into a Place of Quiet Blue Calm #TBT”

“The color blue is strongly associated with sky and water, blue is perceived as a constant in our lives. In the presence of a blue environment, we feel calm. Humans are soothed and replenished when they view blue and there is some evidence that when blue enters our line of vision, the brain sends out chemical signals that work as a tranquilizer. Blue is an excellent choice for areas demanding mental concentration or for products and environments that invite concentration or relaxing, meditative moods.”

[Leatrice Eisman- https://eisemancolorblog.wordpress.com/2015/04/02/retreat-into-a-place-of-quiet]

Let’s take a look at some beautiful examples of how Indigo was used in a number of different applications.

Beaming with Joy!

Mia Design Blog

The architecture of an interior is just as important as the “pretty decor” inside it. In my humble opinion, one of the most impactful architectural elements, is the use of beams! Not only do beams provide structural integrity to your home, but they also add a lot of interest and in some cases, a touch of grandeur! Beams can accompany all sorts of decorating styles like exposed rustic beams in a mediterranean, farmhouse or industrial-styled home while crisply painted white beams work beautifully inside a coastal home.

Beams are becoming more popular in home remodeling. Faux wood beams are a great option if you want a cost efficient and easy installation solution. For an even more environmentally friendly option, you can use reclaimed wood beams that not only qualify as LEED points, but have strength and natural beauty that will stand the test of time.

Lets take a look at some of my favorite examples incorporating architectural beams!

Favorite Interiors from Romantic Comedies

Iconic movies are not always remembered for their plots and actors, but also by their set design. If you’re anything like me, the set design captures your attention just as much as the charismatic stars featured in them.

April Showers

“April showers bring May flowers” – Look at some beautiful bathroom showers as well as a few current bathroom trends!

Bathroom Trends:

1. Clever water control. Touchscreen operated and thermostatic mixers allow the user to control the flow of multiple water sources. Great for two-person showers, they can even be programmed to your personal preferences.

2. Larger showers. More and more people are doing away with the bathtubs all together and creating oversized showers. With easy access entries and large glass partitions, these larger showers actually create a more open feeling within the space.

3. Grey tones. Grey tones provide a great palette for any bathroom style from traditional to contemporary. Grey looks clean and fresh and provides a neutral background for accent colors.

4. Natural beauty. We’ve seen natural elements (think the reclaimed wood movement) become popular in other spaces of the home, but they are now popping up in bathrooms with greater frequency. These types of natural elements lend a calm, spa-like effect to any bathroom.

5. Stand alone tub. Stand-alone tubs are popular for obvious reasons. If you’re lucky to have a large enough space for one, a stand-alone tub can become an artistic focal point of the room.

Style Guide- Series 3: Colorful Cottage

In the spirit of Spring, I thought it would be fun to explore colorful cottages inside and out.

So what exactly is a cottage and what defines cottage style?

The word “cottage” derives from England and typically referred to a small, one-story with living space on the ground floor with bedrooms in the roofspace. In the US, cottages are smaller homes that are often seen as country or coastal vacation resort dwellings.

I would use “charming” to best describe the cottage style in a single word. Style elements usually include casual and comfy furniture, brightly colored exterior doors and shutters, white picket fences, lots of florals, as well as eclectic and personal accents. The space should evoke coziness and warmth.

Cottage Exteriors

Notice their similar “cottagie” details….painted shutters and doors, small roof space rooms and dormers, shingle or wood siding, picket fences, lush gardens amd quaint porches.

How to Create a Beautiful Foyer

The foyer, or entryway, is often a neglected area of the home. Since it’s not a “lived-in” space, people typically don’t think much about it, however, the foyer is the first thing people see when entering your home. Aesthetically, it can set the tone for the entire house with a combination of style and functionally as it’s the first landing space when you enter a home.

Below are a few ideas on how to create a smart, practical, stylish foyer as well as some of my favorite examples.

How do you create an inviting foyer space? Easily using these six elements to a foyer vignette!

  1. A console table, buffet or credenza
  2. A mirror
  3. Two buffet lamps (slightly larger than a standard table lamp) or wall sconces
  4. Two ottomans or a single bench
  5. One or two accent chairs or a settee (optional)
  6. Accessories

For a beautiful foyer space, make sure your elements reflect the style of your home. Here are some examples of the above elements incorporated into a few popular home styles.

Now let’s look at 20 of my favorite foyers! Hopefully they will inspire you to give your foyer or entryway a little love!

example 2

#1: love the casual, lived-in look that the accessories create.

example 3

#2: Simple, clean, and traditional…can’t go wrong!

example 4

#3: This long console table fills the large space without adding weight. The accessories help ground and balance table.

example 13

#4: The gathering shown in this entryway is eclectically beautiful. Great mix of finishes, textures and color which help accentuate the rest of the space.

example 8

#5: This is a great example of a small space having major impact! The bold wallpaper and crisp white accenting furniture is a perfect combination!

example 12

#6: The entryway gathering on the right help balance the weight of the large staircase on the left. Great space- beautifully done!

example 7

#7: A simple console table and mirror accentuated by bright and bold accessories.

example 10

#8: This foyer has fun bold accents that shine all their own but work really well together! Love the pop of emerald green in the lamps!

example 9

#9: The larger pattern on the ottomans and metallic accents add interest to this otherwise neutral and monochromatic gathering.

example 16

#10: This is another grand entry balanced nicely by the grouping of furniture and accessories. The larger ottoman pulled out into the space helps balance the weight of the chandelier above.

example 1

#11: Rustic, charming and interesting is how i would describe this perfectly accessorized entryway. My favorite element are the sconces which shows you’re not limited to just lamps.

example 20

#12: I love the bright and cheerful use of color!

example 14

#13: The heavier wood console table accompanied by the larger scale mirror, lamp and basket help fill in the larger space. The neutral finishes themselves do not detract from the beautiful architectural details.

example 5

#14: Here is a good example of how you can dress up a classic black lacquer table seasonally. Simply change up the accessories to give an entirely new look!

example 21

#15: For a more modern and clean look, use a large full-length mirror. The bright flowers add the pop of color needed in the space.

example 19

#16: Here is another great example of how using a classic white console table allows you to change up the accessories however you wish. The citrus-toned rug and ottomans add a nice pop of color especially for Spring.

example 11

#17: I love this foyer because of the aqua accents. The console table and gathering compliment the fun door and rug.

example 15

#18: Black and white done right- classic!

#19: Great use of scale. The larger accents such as the lamps, table and coral again, fill the space nicely. Keeping them white compliments the airy and bright space.

example 23

#20: I saved the best for last! I love everything about this foyer gathering from the bold wallpaper to the symmetrical accessorizing. This foyer is beautiful and visually interesting!

Wallpaper 101: Knowing the Basics!

If you’re wanting to bring some added life into a room or maybe you’re just tired of painted flat walls; wallpaper can be just the trick! Wallpaper is definitely trending again, especially the less permanent easy-to-apply adhesive wallpaper. Its important when picking a wallpaper to stay away from super-trendy patterns and keep it “room-appropriate”. Monochromatic, textured paper like grasscloth works really well in a bedroom where as a bright saturated and fun print is best suited for a powder room.  Below, I’ll help broaden your paper knowledge by going over classic styles/patterns as well as awesome vendors to purchase from! There are even some fun application ideas for those not wanting to go the traditional route.

Styles

Floral & Botanical

Floral and botanical patterns like these would look amazing in a powder room or bedroom.

Geometric

Geometric patterns can range from octagonal to lattice to chevron and diamond. A geometric paper is usually associated to a more contemporary or transitional look and can go almost anywhere.

Toile & Chinoiserie

Both Toile and Chinoiserie patterns depict a repeated scene of everyday life in the 18th century. Best used in a dining room or entryway, either can create a warm, unique and more formal look.

Fret

Fret, also known as Greek Key is a repeating pattern comprised of lines/bands. Spacing between them are approximately equal to the width of the bands creating a dual pattern using the negative space. Although Fret is a trending pattern currently, its greek classic design will  help its aesthetic longevity. This paper would look great in bathroom!

Grasscloth

Grasscloth paper is a textural paper made from or made to look like woven grass cloth. It often comes in one color but like fabric, its threads vary in color giving it a dynamic look. Grasscloth is a great choice for just about any application.

Adhesive

Traditional wall paper can be costly since it requires professional installation. Peel-and-stick applications are becoming more and more popular because of the diy movement and its less permanent qualities. They are a great option for renters who cannot alter their walls.

Paintable

Paintable paper is embossed to resemble fine plaster work and can be painted over any color you like.

Back to Work!

Going back to work after a long holiday is never easy….however, having a beautiful, inspiring work space can make it a whole lot easier. What better time then the New Year to update your work environment!

These days, it seems like more and more designers (Kate Spade and Jonathan Adler for example) are branching out with accessories that help make your office environment super chic! An organized, fun and personal work space is important to increasing your productivity and creativity. Whether you have a spacious corner office, a small den in your home, a desk in the middle of an open office floor plan or if you’re stuck in a cubicle (like me), there are ways you can add personality and inspiring items to uplift and excite your work day!

Here are 5 tips on keeping your work space tidy and most importantly, CHIC!

1. Clutter-Be-Gone!
Do away with the clutter and minimize the items on your desk. Only keep the most impactful pieces. Consolidate office supplies to a clean and tidy tray so they take up less space.

d560b44fa42b50e6acd638ea370d1d24

2. Pretty Storage Solutions

Storage solutions don’t have to be your typical metal eyesore we’re used to seeing. CB2 and West Elm are a couple of brands that show us that functional storage can also be aesthetically pleasing and stylish.

3. Hide Your Cords

There are so many great cord management products out there to help maintain a clean, cord-free workspace! Below is an example of one that can be installed underneath your desk.

4. Accessorize!

Just like any good outfit, accessories can be just as important as the main piece. Invest in your desk and splurge on accessories that are not only pretty, but will help you stay organized.

5. Make an Inspiration Board!

Nothing is more inspirational than having all the things you wish to accomplish right in front of you to encourage you everyday. Let’s be real, it can be a drag to be stuck behind a desk at work all day, but we do it because we strive to have more, experience more and most importantly, BE more! Display pictures of destinations you would like to visit, family members who inspire you, a paint or fabric swatch you love for a pop of inspirational color, cards from friends and colleagues, or anything else inspiring or uplifting you may have!
